Air filter

I hace a 94 chevy astro eng code Z. i was wondering about k&n air filters, i assume their is only the drop in type, i was wondering if you guys noticed any difference over stock, like mpg gains or power

Just follow a good maintenance plan and you'll do just as well with oem parts. Jim

I have installed K&N Air filters and I can really tell the difference on the low end torque and about 1 to 2 mpg more.

i also have a K&N filter in mine and i did notice a difference between the month old fram i had in it when i switched i was able to more precisely control the RPM that's the only definite thing i can say it did also feel slightly (and i mean slightly) quicker accelerating at any speed especially at low RPM. I haven't had any problems with my MAF yet, i believe that is only a problem if you over oil it during maintenance plus it's easy to clean the MAF if you're so worried about it clean any residue off it when you service the filter. The most annoying part is the cleaning and oiling of the filter it is time consuming and if you need the van in a hurry it's out of the question. Next time i'm going to keep a spare fram filter on hand just in case i need to drive the van while the filter is out

My Black 1990 bought with 132.000 - always used Fram and Valvoline 10w30. Changed every 3,000 miles +- 50. Sold to my neighbor (still drives 45miles to work one way) with 264,000 on it a year ago. Should've never sold it. My 2000 Safari just switched to synthetic and mobile 1 filter. Developed lifter noise in the 1st 1,000 miles. 122,000 miles on it. Might just be coincidence though. Don't know what the hell to do now! Advise?

Okay...It's much worse now. Lifter noise when I start it and always when I put my foot in it. Without a load, it's quiet and smooth. As soon as a load is on it...tick, tick, tick, etc. Any ideas? I went through this with a 1998 Bonneville & ended up putting new lifters in it to cure the noise. Shortly after, the oil pressure dropped to 5 or so. My van still carries around 45psi no matter what. Any ideas? I tried seafoam as it worked very well in an import with over 200,000 miles on it. No changes since the seafoam. With all the problems lately, I'm ready to scrap it.

Holy thread revival batman! Oh well....

I replaced the whole Vin Z TBI Air Filter housing with a chromed Holley 10" air cleaner.
Not sure if it works better or gets more miles or whatever,

but it sure lets me hear the engine growl for more air! I like it.

You could throw a K&N 10" element in there real easy with a few more bucks.
I also noticed the stock astro paper element fits the holley 10" perfectly, so its the same size element either way.

Might be time to switch back to 10W-30 dino oil. Maybe the synthetic is just too slippery!

try a 10W40 oil, maybe just the Walmart Supertec high mileage for the sake of trying it....and a NAPA gold filter.

Some filters behave differently when it comes to start-up noise, a 40 weight oil is fine for that mileage.
