Anyone been following Dakar this year?
I can't believe Johnny Campbell is riding shotgun with Robby Gordon. (Johnny Campbell wins Baja all the time as part of Team Honda XR 650. He is a super great, super nice guy. Quiet, and tough as steel.)

Robby in a Hummer and Peterhansel in a Mini have been dukin it out for 1st. the Minis are pretty sweet and awesome in the tight stuff as you'd expect.
French racer Stephan Peterhansel in the Monster Mini . No penalty given here.

Excerpt from ADVRider thread that has been covering the race. This Canadian guy "Deadly99" is a writer and has been invited to join a support team for this years Dakar and has been writing all kinds of cool insider info about what goes on inside the bivouac behind the scenes etc. He is putting out a book next fall about it.

"Hate to say this but NO American will ever win the race. ASO don't run a fair game as has been proven year after year and time and time again. I'll address this in the book as I haven't quite figured out how to express this situation yet. I'm not knoicking the race as for 85 percent of the competitors it is an awesome race and the ASO run a top notch event. But for those fighting for a podium finish...well.... "
Spaniard Marc Coma dukin in out on the bikes with Frenchman Cyril Despres. Coma rides up to a muddy section and thinks it looks bad so he goes a different way.
Despres rides into mud and gets stuck. Asks another stuck rider for help so the guy helps him but Despres doesn't return the favor, instead just speeds off leaving the guy to get his own bike out by humself.
Then Despres complains to the ASO (his fellow Frenchmen) that the mud was not marked as mud on the map (that is not the job of the map- or road book as it is called- the mud was created by the rain storm the night before) But the ASO credited him his time back that he was stuck in the mud anyway. And that is about the time that he beat Marc Coma by after Marc lost 2nd and 3rd gear in his bike so had to navigate away from the hillclimbs in the dunes and took a longer route.

Lots of fun to follow, too bad for all the politics.
Anybody?
