Realsing parking brake?
Realsing parking brake?
Hi i have a 91 chevy astro, I used the parking take the other day so I could put the shifter in first and remove the dash trim. After that the parking brake hasn't fully disengaged. The ebrake light stays on I drove a short distance with it and felt that the left drum got hotter than he left. I went underneath and lubed the cable a bit and try to free it. it loosened it up a bit because there is not the same resistance. But if I go over 90khm there is a vibration and the light is still on. Im thinking that i need to take the drum off and release it, but ive never done any work on drums before and im not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Here's a simple way to free up the cable. Some times it works and some times it doesn't. It's worth a try. Pull the release handle, hold it out and work the parking brake pedal several times. If this doesn't work then the cable will probably need to be replaced. Good luck.

Re: Realsing parking brake?
Replacing the e-brake cables is a common repair on these vans. they rust and then they stick. you could try to force some lube into them maybe,
theres 2 of them, the connect together near the gastank at the adjuster, and go back into the drums.
Pretty straightforward replacement, and the new cable isnt too expensive at most auto parts stores.
but if your not comfortable with it, any brake repair shop can do it, and inspect the rest of the system while in there.
