Re: np136 vs np236
The 233 is fine unless you really love your AWD. The 233 will give you 2hi-4hi and 4lo. The 4auto setting on the 236 is our AWD.

Any ideas about the gasket replacement:

Are special tools needed for this job?

Re: np136 vs np236
Hi,
I don't have experience re building internals of T case. Just be careful and call or visit your local shops. Also, try You Tube search for T case rebuild.
Thank you for the good link to re build kits. The one kit that has the upgrade parts to prevent pump rub that wears through the magnesium case is a good idea.
My np233 came out of 2 door z81 s10 blazer, 1998 year. I have not yet installed it in my 2003 Astro.
I thought I would just drive it to see if it works ok before rebuilding it. But maybe I should rebuild or at least inspect internals before install? But I imagine most T case is durable and it should be ok. Fix it now or fix it later?

Re: np136 vs np236
I was just browsing the parts in the above link and there it was! There are two sets of friction discs shown. One for $44 and the second for $74. The $44 looks to be made up of Alto automatic transmission discs which don't last and the $74 kit has the OEM style. I learned a long time ago when standing at the parts counter and the guy gives you a choice?

Re: np136 vs np236
The frictions of these AWD cases are critical!! Some sell frictions that are originally for auto transmissions and have different frictional properties than those designed for the 136/236/246. They fit, yes, but do not work well at all!! Even when properly clearances. They will bind and cause crow hopping. I learned the hard way. Stay with the oem frictions and use the blue Autotrac 2 fluid.
