Thanks Astrophysics. My Hybrid may be a bit overkill for normal use, but I wanted to see how far I could take it. It could be useful to any V8 swaps though. This is a wonderful product that could help all Astro Safai AWD enthusiasts.

Re: NP236/246 hybrid build
racr you say, "The front output shaft shown above the planetary on the right is from the 246 and will NOT fit in the 236/136 case. It uses different sized bearings not compatible with the 236/136 cases."
So did you have to swap the 236 front output shaft onto the 246 planetary?

Re: NP236/246 hybrid build
Sorry I missed this from December. But the answer is yes. The planetaries are the same dimensions between the 236 and 246. There are 2 versions of the 246. One is used in the lighter V8 setups and use a 4 pinion planetary. The heavier duty 246 uses a 6 pinion planetary. A snap ring on the back side of the planetary holds the front output shaft meshed in place. So did you have to swap the 236 front output shaft onto the 246 planetary?
Cheers

Re: NP236/246 hybrid build
Greetings what a really good article you have posted. I have started my journey on doing exactly what you're doing or what you have done I know this is an older thread I hope you receive it and can provide some answers to a few questions I have now as well as I'm sure I will my van is a 2001 GMC Safari AWD. So the transmission I'm having built should be a direct bolt to the rear of the 5.3 LS. In the meantime while the transmission is being built for heavy hauling I am now configuring the install of a NP246 TC.
The transfer case is from a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 donor. I'm going to rebuild it myself and waiting for parts now. I stripped the entire transmission management wiring harness along with control module from the donor truck as well.
Well looking at what's in front of me I noticed that the front differential on the all-wheel drive or at least I don't see any motor actuator on the all-wheel drive OEM front diff but from the donor GMC Sierra I believe the front diff had a motor actuator because there's a plug on it but I cannot see a plug on my front diff. The light need to change the front diff as well? Thanks for any help you can provide in advance!

My 2001 AWD Safari SLT has airlift bags on the rear suspension, transmission cooler, upgraded transmission and electric trailer brake controller. It earns it keep when not doing regular driving.

Re: NP236/246 hybrid build
So today I tried to marry up my front drive shaft to the uninstalled 246tc only to find out that the 136 all wheel drive had a male splined receiver from the TC and this 246 upgrade is female and my driveline end is also female splined as well. What did you do to overcome this? I'm hoping to find the TC side of the drive shaft from the donor 4x4 and replace the AWD 136 connection but I don't know if that's going to work or not any help please?
