Keith, we've got to keep our mouths shut down here and not rebell so it won't become worse,,oh wait, we've been doing that rather well through the years, haven't we ?

What we need is ONE large rebellion and not anyone pay taxes for one year. What the hell would they do then ? That would be interesting to say the least.

Let me know when you are doing this - I be sure to go buy a house before you set this all up :)

buy a large van and stock it with groceries and stack up some cash and prepair to live in the van, just in case they confiscate your house and lock up your bank acct.

but in al honesty, something like that needs to happen sooner or later

What is an excise tax? Like you have to pay taxes on the vehicle yearly???
Washington previously had a yearly registration fee based on vehicle worth, but it was voted out through the inititative process. (The initiative was overturned on legal grounds, but the legislature got the message... sort of... and kept the lower flat fee.) At one time, we were down to a yearly $30 fee. But the legislature can't leave this well enough alone... and a year or so ago a "weight fee" was added to the $30. And now towns and counties have been granted authority to tack on another $20 if they feel so inclined for road projects. (Over in T.Low's area, I think they might be paying another fee for mass transit projects too, but I'm not sure.)

We had a couple of bills introduced this past session that was going to add a fee based on a vehicles displacement and/or "greenhouse gas emissions". (If both had passed, my truck would have been tagged an extra $640 and my van $515 [approx.])

Granted, WA is certainly cheaper than many states, but it is annoying when the people demand a flat $30 fee and the politicians keep adding on more.

I like mine better. When I was in Tennessee, it was $59.00 + $10 for the smog check. Then, Davidson County tacked another $20.00 on.

Montana tried a flat rate for a while, but went back to the apportioned rate. But, since mine was over 10 years old, I was given the opportunity to make my tags permanent by paying for 3 years. Because I also opted for the Veteran tags, tack another $50 on top of that (that money goes to the State Veterans Home), for a total of $195 -- AND I DON'T HAVE TO BUY TAGS FOR THE VAN AGAIN!

It was worth it.

In Texas, if you buy a used vehicle from a dealer you pay sales tax. Depending on where you are (within city limits etc) it's 6.25% to 8.25% of the purchase price.
If you buy from an individual you don't.
I'd be willing to bet If I looked it up in the tax code, i'd probably find a requirement for individual sellers to collect the sales tax as well, but nobody does. When you register the vehicle with the DMV, you just pay the registration fee. I just bought a 96 jeep for my son, sales tax was $237.
