Pole barn electrical rewire/lighting.

Well there is trouble in paradise.After I told the landlord that I needed ALL the electric power on my side of the pole barn and on the other side is barely enough power for lighting,he rented the other side and told him he was going to drop a sub panel off my side to supply him with power for lights,220 for a welder and compressor.There is only 200 amps of power there.That might be a deal breaker.I clean up a fringing mess before from his haft bass moves.Now after a month of my FREE hard work and the money I spent out of my own dam pocket,the landlord is going to ignore me and tear into it.I am soooooooooo ticked off I could just spit.Going to talk the landlord in the morning,and if he doesn't back down,I might be back to everything on hold again packing it all up.I am so mad right now can't even sleep.

Well after the morning call,he is going to call me as I asked him to do when they figure how to power the other side of the barn.As far as I am concerned until this issue is resolved,the jury is still out. ](*,) ](*,) Yepper story of my life huh.

Sad part about it is there is a second line buried going to the other side that goes to the house.A second service is the only real way to do this.I am going to tell his electrician that is the only acceptable method.

I'm no sparky but with a 200 amp service to the barn there should be more than enough for both sides.

Well I am adding it up.I/R told me today with the motor I have and the compressor pump I have I should be running a two pole 60 amp breaker for that alone.Then I have to have a separate 220 breaker for the planed plasma cutter which is 40 amps.That is haft of the total service to the barn and not including the lights I have on the overhead,walls,over the bench and two separate 20 amp breakers for each side of the barn's wall outlets.The guy that rented the other side has a 220 welder and compressor too.

Sad part of all this is the main breaker is in the basement and to get to it you have to have access threw one of the apartments.I know that because in fact I did kick off that breaker and ended up setting on the bumper of the LT for a hour and a haft until that tenant got home.Really screwed up that day's work.

So the landlord today told me nothing is going to happen in changes unless I am there and he is going to set up a day with me when he brings out his electrician.We will see what comes of that.I surely will not stand for the screwed up wiring that I torn out of there.I spent the better part of a month fixing all that.............

Gary, when adding up electrical loads, you don't just add them up. It's not like you will be running everything at once. A 200 amp service is plenty unless both you and the new tenant are going to use plasma cutters and air comps and welders at the same time. The ratings are absolute max and chances are you won't be drawing max very often if at all. The compressor won't draw any where near 60 amps either. Looks like a 2 hp motor?

It's a 5hp T56.There is a separate under ground service wire not hooked up laying there on the other side I want the landlord to use.

That motor is rated for around 20 amps full load, maybe a little more or less. Starting current is why you need the larger breaker.

This is what I was thinking, I know for a fact the large majority of breaker boxes I've seen outweigh the amperage rating of the service and I've seen more than a few over the years, mine,,, waaay over. I have in my garage a sub-panel run from a 30 amp in the main and have yet to pop that 30, It is well lit with half a dozen fixtures or so but I only run a "portable" dewalt compressor, hobart 125 and heavy wood working tools occasionally. I have hooked up my old buzzbox once, an old 80 amp 220 welder and that didn't dim the lights as I expected but I use that so seldom I've yet to put a circuit in for it, I use alligator clips to the panel like we used to use for floor sanders when no outlet was available.
