body mounted spare tire holder
Re: body mounted spare tire holder
Once I get rid of the shop van,it will allow me to un-bury Ole Yellar from the back of the shop.I have noticed that is has a class III hitch and a full size spare.Honestly I don't know how that was done yet.

Just FYI...1Gary wrote:Once I get rid of the shop van,it will allow me to un-bury Ole Yellar from the back of the shop.I have noticed that is has a class III hitch and a full size spare.Honestly I don't know how that was done yet.
My 95 came with a class 3 & full sized spare underneath.
I even hung a 235/75-15 under there.
No problems at all.
AFAIK, Its only the shorty vans that lack the room required for full size spare...

Here is the Airstream conversion van (Chevrolet Express) solution...
http://www.colonialairstream.com/airstr ... index.html
It looks like it is hinges near, or below, the bottom of the bumper, and ppivots rearward. I can't see how it is latched, attached, or kept from rattling when in the "upright and locked" position.

Re: body mounted spare tire holder
Looks a lot like the Roadtrek solution. They add a second 2" hitch receiver offset to the driver's side, then it's just a standard tilt-down spare tire rack that slips in. Usually a pin keeps it upright. If you were off-roading you'd probably want to add a couple of bolts to take up any slack so that the system doesn't rattle back and forth and beat anything up.wkastro wrote:Here is the Airstream conversion van (Chevrolet Express) solution...

I thought about that for my van but I do a lot of in/out of the rear doors and use the back area for cooking, so I don't want to be stepping over the tire in the lowered position all the time.

Re: body mounted spare tire holder
What if the arm holding the tire pivoted off to the left, instead of backwards? A stop could keep it just off the ground. Don't know if it would clear the left Dutch door bottom. It would put a tire changer out towards traffic in some situations - pull way off the road.
Herbie, what did you ever do with the G80 from the S10 donor?

Re: body mounted spare tire holder
Left it in the junkyard. They wanted a bit too much for it, and once I realized it wasn't going t be a bolt-in (requiring pro shimming, etc.), that project wasn't in the budget yet.wkastro wrote:

I'm spending a little time with my new tire/wheel combo to determine if I need to re-gear, or if I can stick with the stock ratio, then I'll decide what to do about lockers, etc.

Re: body mounted spare tire holder
Bought one 2 weeks ago before trip to Utah. A poorly designed piece of garbage, that will tweak your doors so badly they can't open. More info in a post I submitted that's not up yet. A real shame, as I try to buy products built in the USA, even if they cost more. DO NOT BUY THIS INFERIOR PRODUCT. Very dissapointed. MadMatt
