Dreamin of swappen a diesel with manual tranny to boot, to my 99 Astro V6 OR 95 big Chev 20 V8. Both have less than 100K, very clean and tight. So all or any of yu grease monkeys with the experience got some ideas will be most humbly extrapolated, if it works yu get two weeks with my FAT wife. (She needs the exercise). I hear a lot of GMC diesels convert well??
I'm all earz....

I voted for the full-size van. My thought is if you are going to convert to a 6.2 or 6.5 diesel, it will be a much easier swap as there is more room and you could use factory parts.
But I'm all for a diesel Astro/Safari! And a 6.2 or 6.5 would be cool. And if you did something like the newer small diesels in the Jeep line-up, that would be even cooler!

Either or both, depending on the engine. The G20 has the room for any of the Detroit Diesel V8's or alternately the Duramax 6600, which I'd back with an 11" dual-disc clutch and an EATON® FO-8407 single-overdrive with dual PTO provisions. The Astro is trickier; my practical set-up would use an outside engine: The Cummins® ISF2.8c-160 (part of the Cummins Repower program package) through a 10.5" single disc and ZF® S6-650 single-overdrive (one of the few medium-duty gearboxes designed for a dual-cable shifter) into a 9" Currie full-float with 3.23:1 R&P and EATON® Truetrac™.
