RC: Wheely King conversion from 2WD to 4WD

I bought my Wheely King 2WD RTR quite a while ago. Still a very popular truck to play with. Lots of bashing and it can handle all the crap you throw at it or into it. Anyways I have been on RCCrawlers.com site on and off thinking to convert my truck to rock crawling 2.2 for competition. After much thinking I do not I will do that anymore because I want a truck that can go fast and bash around but still 4x4 a bit. So I have gone the route to just change it to a 4WD and then up the components to make it faster and stronger later.
Here is the truck ready to be upgraded:
Some of the parts required to perform the upgrade:

Basically a front differential and a center to front drive shaft is required. It took me all of 50 minutes to do the conversion.
Here is a video you can watch. (Ok, I think it is still updating my channel info ...)
Runs great!
Now if only my brushless stuff for my onroad RC would come soon! :(

How much does something like that run? I have considered getting my son and I an electric Stadium 4x4 truck, just haven't done it. They would be fun, we even have a place close by to race them at.

Before I list out the cost It depends with what you want to do with the RC. All in all this is a very good truck.
It is a 1/12th scale so a bit smaller than a 1/10th but because of that it has lots of fun packed into it. Run time on a 3600mAh battery with stock stuff is VERY good at about 45 minutes!
I can tell you all the specs but go google "HPI Wheely King" and you will get more information than you want. Also go to youtube.com and watch videos on it.
You mentioned Stampede ... Electric or Gas? I think they come in both but yes that is a very good truck as well and is 1/10th scale.
I have put the WK through a lot of bashing ... so has Crash Kevin and his son so I know it will hold up.
I bought for around $200 back then ... $35 for the 4WD conversion parts (Ebay). I think know you can BUY it in the 4WD for about $220!!! Oh CDN not USD. As well there is a lot of support for this truck to do anythings. As mentioned I was going to go to Crawling 2.2 standards - the cost would be only $60 for parts (shocks, extenders, diffs (better ones and then epoxy for locking diffs lol) and little parts here and there) and I be able to have fun with the big boys Again google / youtube. HPI has an offical thread on their forum to do this as well.

I forgot to add that Crash Kevin has an Axial Scorpion which can go over a crap load of things! That thing is awesome! But it is a crawler - so depends with what you want.

Cool, thanks. I was just looking for a 4x4 stadium type truck which is a little lower than yours, but still packs a bunch.....just something for the kid and I to play around with in yard bascially.

*chokes on water*
More powerful? You mean by power or by speed? Either of which is easily upgraded on any RC
Again it depends with what you want. I do believe the one you are looking at is gas? Kevin and Sanj are into RCs as well I am sure they can pitch in a few pointers.

I recently wached some R/C crawling videos on YouTube and was impressed. But what really caught my eye was the F-250/350 truck Tamiya is offering. Sweet! I might have to save up for one of them.

I never mentioned power......I like the stadium 4x4's cause they sit lower and an electric can still move out pretty well. Just a backyard toy so I don't need a scale 150mph truck. I've watched videos and even at local track of some electric trucks that are somewhat fast and can do some hill climbs/ jumps.

Woot looks like we got a mini RC club going here
Yeah those Tamiya Hi-lift RCs look very nice - nice = $$$ as well :(
Blazer there are many options open. I might be buying another truck cause dad likes it and wants to play more often than I want him to hah ha.
Not to throw another possibility at you but how about a buggy? They are much lower and pack power for sure (sorry I miss read your last post).

Check out the Axial Scorpion if you want a good crawler. They are expensive but like abe says they will climb nearly anything. My truck was $400 for the stock kit that comes with locked transfer case and locked axles and front wheel steering. You will then need a motor and a speed controler plus radio and reciever. Total cost into mine was just under $500 using a old radio that I had from old projects. I added rear steering on mine and it is just nuts the stuff that it will go over.
If your looking for a good monster truck to just boot around with and cut some doughnuts and generally have fun the wheely king is good as you can do a little bit of everything with it. If you want to go fast and jump it will take a all day beating and keep going. Then if you want to go rock crawling you just need to change the gearing and lock the rear axle. The same can be said for the Clod Buster truck. They have been making that one for 20 plus years that I know of and it is still one of the best alround 4wd trucks out there.
If you want a stadium truck or a buggy you can go with a Traxxass or one simular they are easy to hop up with a simple engine swap for as little as $60 and a $75 electronic speed controler it would go fairly quick definatly enough to keep a kid happy for quite some time. If you go with a brushless engine system they are expensive but you could easily have the truck running 50-75mph however if you go with too much power it can become hard to control. Sanj has a off road 2wd buggy that will easily smoke on a gas powered RC it is honestly the fastest car that I have ever seen run. I thought mine was fairly fast and sanj came past me smoking the back tires and sideways.

Abe,No wonder why you didn't make it out yesterday for racing.
I think what BLAZER'S after IS a Stadium truck.I have a
Associated T-3 stadium truck & it's by far the toughest off roader I
have ever owned.(I have thousands tied up in RC)An ideal basher or racer.
I really enjoy taking mine to the local BMX tracks. The two leading manufacturers
for stadium trucks are Associated & Losi,Next in line would be the traxxas Stampede.
A "Pede" set up properly will take plenty of abuse aswell. If your looking for a small
package with allot of punch is the mini T's.1/18th scale but with lipo cells & brushless
power it will be a handfull & fast.I have pulled wheelies at 40 mph with them.
Start off with stock brushed or modified brushed power,if you decide to go high kv
brushless be prepared to melt clutches, spur gears,& break lots of parts.
Honda civic $20,000
RC staduim truck $500
RC staduim truck paddles the 1/16 mile faster than a civic = priceless.

Well ... like I said in my voicemail ... I did not have my phone with me it was with the GF and I was home not wanting to do work so I happily wasted time on the Wheely King instead. Then I got my phone back with some missed calls *_* boo I missed some bashing!
Actually I think the new gears in the front diff er ... may not be lubed up right ... I hear noses already after running 4 packs of batts through
