40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
i was roaming the net looking for a small rotary engine (to put in a quad) and found this instead compared to the rotamax engines

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
I know it's heresy, but if those really come to be, I might seriously consider it when the v6 craps out instead of the v8 swap. Mounting that dinky little thing would be a whole new set of challenges wouldn't it?
One thing I missed in the videos is: how do they cool it? or is air cooled?
It's for sure they won't be cheap though.

it said somewhere that it was air/oil cooled the who body of the engine is a heat sink
mounting that would be.... yeah a challenge sure, those will be some seriously custom mounts. i don't even wanna guess at what the price tag to get one would be

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
man that's intriging. I'd like to see it set up in a real vehicle and see it operate under load.
of course everyone will want the 850hp version. That'd be terrifying in my 'stro.

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
yep it is hard to believe. It has to overcome two real world hurdles.
It has to be an engine that can actually pull a load and not just spin fast.
and, it has to survive the onslaught of the all the auto and engine manufacturer's attempts to bury it.
We have the perfect government here in the US to protect it right now, if they can be made aware of its existence.
If peak oil is real, the oil companies simply have to adjust the prices of gas, and they can make as much money as they ever did.
I'd pay a buck 80 for gas and be quite happy with the torque off the myt engine.
everybody wins!

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
you'd have to put serious limiters on one of these for most people to drive it in the winter but would sure be fun to tow with it if it's as good as they say..... come to think of it youd have to reinforce everything in the van to run one of those....

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
The articles state the a typical SUV sized MTY engine would be about the size of an alternator and weigh around 100lbs. Engine production is supposed to start this year.

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
That's a lot of power, I'd be happy with double what the van came with.
100M was when he was shopping the engine to car mfgs, but they wanted to buy controlling stakes in his company, which he did not like.
He's scaled back. Plan is for a smaller facility and making the engine available for retrofit applications.

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
I stood next to a Mazda rotary drag race car as it staged for a run. This guy must have had boo-kue bucks into it.I didn't expect it and found out later he left the line at 11,000 rpm.My ears rang for the better part of that day for sure. When I spoke to him,he said he needed to rev it up that high to get any power out of it.This seems very much like one of them. The physics's doesn't change.Small cubic inch requires high rpm to produce work/power.Got to wonder how durable they are. When I was apart of GM engine plant, the job I had was to dyno run engines controlled by computer at 1,500 rpm for two hrs and then 3,500 rpm for two hrs until they blew up.It ran the program 24/7 just like that.Once they failed a repairman and I would take them apart to see what failed and report that back to engineering.Big corporations are some of the few that can afford programs like that.Even then with new product start-up's and all the R & D,there where big dollar issues the came about once it came to mass production.LOL-that is why you guys have always said not to buy the first few yrs of something new.
Limited production and high demand=high selling price. The economics doesn't change either.Maybe one could be found in Jay Leno's garage in time.LOL-maybe by time this old hot rodder is ready to turn in his license, they will be affordable.

Re: 40 to 1 power/weight ratio...?
considering in 2006 they had spent 4 million on it i think and it's 2009 now i'm sure a consderable amount has been spent on it (in theory...) supposedly has a considerable few parts then the ICE's you had worked on so finding out what was failing would probably be easier(in theory) now fixing what failed would probably be just as difficult if not harder to make sure it won't every happen again

no joke. just about the time my transmission exploded it'd twist up my 2 ton tin can and prep it for the JY.Cobra wrote:you'd have to put serious limiters on one of these for most people to drive it in the winter but would sure be fun to tow with it if it's as good as they say..... come to think of it youd have to reinforce everything in the van to run one of those....
think of all the tread you could burn off your tires.....
size of an alternator, now that would be a weird set up. Not exactly a tuner's dream is it...which one's the engine?
