DTV convertor box

Post by GEJ »

We folks I got finally my US $40 dollar coupon today to purchase the DTV box. While I was waiting for the coupon, everyone had the boxes.Yepper-now everyone has the coupons and guess what.......everyone is out of the boxes. #-o #-o ](*,) Typical, just another thing the government shouldn't get involved in.We have here in Rochester,NY only one station that has changed over.I talked to the Wally world clerk and he wasn't sure that the boxes had the program able to switch back and forth, the antennas surely don't and it sounded like even if he had them in stock,I would have to rig-up some sort of A/B switch. He told me that some customers get the boxes and they work and some get them and some do not. That the same holds true for the antennas depending on their area.Man-that sounds just like something the US government would do.I am kind of ticked off about all this.......................

Btw-no cable or dish in this home base.I'll be dammed if some egghead elected official is going to dictate to me where to spend my money on this subject.Just stupid, plain stupid.

Well....Regardless of what you think about it we're stuck with it. No cable here either. My converter box works fine. It gives me more stations so it's not all bad. \:D/

We bought the converter box last June, hooked it up watched for 5 minutes then unhooked it. We're far enough away from the transmitters in Chicago that just using rabbit ears doesn't result in that great of analog picture quality, but it's watchable. Digital picture goes all pixelated and sucks to watch. Luckily they extended the analog cut off date so I'm not trying to mount a roof top antenna in the middle of winter. Seriously who thought that a winter time cut off date would be good when some outside work would have to be done for so many.

Logan,it's not a question of using a analog antenna with the box. Some of (well really only one station)has made the change and the other 4 has not.Wouldn't that mean I would have to connect the box for the one station and disconnect it for the other 4 if I didn't have a A/B switch???.

The Zenith DTT901 converter boxes from circuit city allow you to switch from analog to digital signal without swapping any cables. I have been using mine for several months now and I am happy. Channel 2 (Chicago) is the only problem channel that sometimes I can't get the digital signal. They are the only ones that broadcast their digital signal over VHF instead of UHF like everyone else. I have a good quality antenna in my attic with a good quality pre-amp and I am 45 miles from downtown Chicago. I have been cable/dish free all of my life. When I visit someone who has cable I am amazed on how much crap there is on TV and how much they are paying each month to have access to this crap.

The HD signal over cable/dish is compressed which doesn't look as good as the HD signal I get over my antenna for free.

Cool-Thanks for the reference. That is kind of what I was asking for-someone who had experience with a brand.I have a feeling with the shortages that I will need as many references of different brands as I can get.

Gary, My box is a Magnavox. It only has an on/off switch. Although now most of the TV is controlled through a remote. I get all of the regular channels and a few more that weren't there previous to hooking up the box. I still use the same antenna. \:D/

Ya know you could just spend the money on an FTA satellite setup........... The initial cost of my buddies was 180 bucks cdn. No monthly bills or anything after that and he gets a good many channels. I personally pay to play but it wasn't my decision...........
