Struts

Post by chemist »

This may not be related specifically to the Astro, as I have to do this job on a Chevy Cobalt. But obviously, Astros have them in front too...

How much of a PIA are struts to do? I've heard it is extremely dangerous. I plan on getting a spring compressor if do this--I'm guessing that makes it somewhat safer... Anyone who's changed struts on something they've owned want to advise?

2007 Chevy Cobalt
1998 Maza MPV (180K mi and in need of PA inspection--only paid $500!)

Needed: a Gen 2 Astro project vehicle...

It really depends on the quality of the spring compressor you use. You want a compressor that holds each end of the spring securely so it can't go anywhere. Also the body of the compressor needs to be strong enough so that it won't flex while squishing the spring. In my experience it's not a terribly difficult job, but my experience is also with non-rusty California cars. Air tools are helpful as well.

As with any job involving suspension there is the potential to injure yourself. Just be careful and be aware of what you are taking apart as you do it.

Also, the last time I checked Astro's didn't have struts. They use regular shocks with coil springs in the front and shocks with leaf springs in the rear. While I am not familiar with the Cobalt's suspension I would imagine that it does use struts.

Good luck!

James is correct. Astro and Safari vans never had struts.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

Just replaced the springs and struts on my wife's Jeep Liberty this past weekend. I used the Advance Auto loaner spring compression kit (Powerbuilt Kit #1). Job really isn't that hard or dangerous if you use a good compressor.

I watched these videos before starting the job.

Lets you see what you're in for.

p.s. Fun part about doing the Liberty was having to spread the coils with a pry bar to get the tool installed on them.
