welded hinges....

Post by Moreforles »

started thinking about what I wanted to salvage form the 88 shorty, and just realized.... the doors aren't bolted on like on older full sized vans (78-95) they welded the hinges....

any suggestions...... or quick tips.....

Drive the pins out of the hinges. Easy. GM offers a bolt in hinge replacement kit if that's necessary. If you want to keep the jam side hinge you'll have the cut them out. \:D/

anyone nearby looking for parts, let me know.. come over and take a look. I dont want it here too long (hopefully gone by the end of the month.....) not enough room for RV, 94 astro, work van (safari), my wife's van (Mercury Villager) and shorty astro.... I mean they fit.. but its just too many.... (not for me, but some people)

I already got the factory wagon type rims off.... looking hard at bumbers. fender trim, running boards (black), grill, seats, side window (for my sliding door on 94 astro) rear doors will fit astro, but not dutch doors on Safari) front doors and slider will fit either. exhaust looks fairly new.... should fit either (although will be short due to being froj shorty.... will need to cut and space....) radiator looks good and still full of antifreeze, rotors are scrap.... but master cylinder and calipers seem to work fine (pumped fluid out from leaky front and rear linesdont know about starter/alternator

88 has old style circular air filter for carburator not the rectangular filters on newer models, engine might be fine.... but not planning on pulling it at this point....(unless someone else wants to :-k )

swapped out the rear end from 88 to 96, think I'll swap hoods with the 94 along with the grill.

the front buckets are headed for my rv. exhaust is off, may scrap the converter or save it for future use on either 94 or 96

took a sawsall to rear hinges.... not enough room to tap out the lower pins.... bumpers in the way... got rear and front doors.

some of the last couple posts coulda/shoulda been added on to the "couldn't let another one get away....." post but..... oh well.... as far as the welded hinges go.... I took a saws all to the 88 rear barn door hinges (on the JAMB side) but still have to drive the pins out on those as well as my 98 Safari doors and the replacement doors I picked up today.... anybody had any luck getting them out.... I tried with a small sledge hammer and a awl... they don't want to budge....

There is a specific tool for that. Looks like a C-Clamp with a fork on the anvil end. Or, you can heat-n-beat.
