Does anyone know if this is an interference engine? I have a line on a Contour for cheap, but I can hear the timing belt starting to come apart and hitting the upper timing belt cover.

It is an interference engine. Looks like I need to inspect the belt before trying to drive it anywhere.

Yep, that's the same engine that is in our Focus. I had the belt replaced around 100K as advised for that very reason.

Found out that it is in fact a non-interference engine.
Here's the engine running. It recently started making this noise.

I removed the inspection cover and the belt appears very loose. Maybe it jumped a tooth. Think it's fixable or should I pass?

that's a handy piece of info. My brother in-law drives a focus with 70K on it. I just passed that bit of wisdom on to him.

I was just looking around on the net a bit more and there seems to be non-consensus on this.
Actually, most agree this was designed a non-interference engine. But apparently there are many instances where a broken timing belt results in a trashed engine. Some speculate it has to do with carbon build up, fully opened valves, or just manufacturing tolerences. I guess people will have to decide what they are comfortable with.

Contours are bad news. Don't waste your money. I can go into detail if you like, things like the mexican engine wiring harness is NOT made of heat resistant wire, the trans are junk, the dasboards come apart, the heater blower wiring burns up and is a beast to fix, so on and so forth.
Also, listen close and scope the #3 cyl, they like to burn that piston for some reason. Did I mention they are junk?
