HELP??? Crunching Noises front right wheel AWD

When I drive the Van slowly I hear a crunching noise, thinkin maybe C-V Joints,
I've been lookin into this and found some saying about a gear or front wheel clutch for front axles.
We Put a used Caliper on the right said and since then we have discovered this problem.
We removed the wheel inspected the shoes and caliper everything seem to be OK. Nothing relevant.
Drive again and after a short distance we notice the crunching noise again then the van is resisting on the right side and we limp around the block and return home again. wheel off and again nothing obvious.. ???

I Use AWD via pulling fuse to disable front axles and only engage during winter weather.. Just pulled it a few days ago..

Something deeper for sure ?
- CV Joint?
- Transfer case?
- Front Axel Box??
I can call toll free if anyone has any ideas, send Number by PM.. Can/USA only for calls.

Pull the caliper and rotor. Spin the hub over by hand and feel for any roughness, noise and/or play. If it is bad you'll feel it. Sounds like it is the issue though. Is your ABS light on? Normally the ABS light comes on due to debris on the sensor when the bearing is failing. If the hub bearing is smooth, look towards the used caliper you placed on that side.

Looks to be about $128 to $245 each at Rock Auto depending on quality/name brand. (I looked up an '03. Older should be comparable or cheaper.)

Oh, and I wouldn't skimp on quality/price in this area...

Mine was in the $400's due to the dang integrated ABS sensor. I went with a premium brand.

Hi,

Just had a new left front wheel bearing hub assembly changed on my 2003 AWD Astro.
This got rid of the rotational vibration that existed before .

Yippee.

Now I trust the Astro to go off roading to try out the 30" Cooper tires.

My 3,42 axle ratio really needs to be re geared to 3.73 or even 4.10.

Maybe this summer.

For a 30" tire, I'd definitely go 4.10. That's right about the height I've got (~29.5") and it's just about perfect. My highway cruising is still at a decently low RPM (at least at the speed I can realistically cruise with the Astrobrick + roofrack, etc.), but hill climbing, etc. is much improved. I really spent WAY too long with the stock gears.

Yep, I have 3.73 stock and 4.10 would with the 30.5" or so tires would put me back almost exactly to stock with the 3.73 and 215/70-16 tires.

I may be confusing you with someone elses post, but awhile ago someone I read that someone did this and was not happy with 1 part of the upgrade, maybe it was with the carrier...does this ring a bell? I really should just go to 4.10 if I am keeping my van.
