Runs fine, then dies

Hello everyone.

Right, as perhaps 3 of you will know, I just changed the alternator in my van. That went fine.

But since I changed it, she runs like **** (I got told I couldn't say that). Everything's fine til she's nice and warmed up, then under load, like a hill or whatnot, she'll cough and splutter and try and die. After that she won't even idle. The only thing that'll fix it is to leave her sit and cool down.

This van ran perfect up to 3 days ago when the alternator went. I don't think it's fuel related, but electric. I've cleaned the distributor and rotor with electronics cleaner and I'll keep you posted in case this works (or doesn't) and if somebody else has the same issue.

Don't mess with things that you did not touch during the Alternator replacement.

Go back over your work and figure out what you screwed up.

And yes, as you were told... This is a Family Friendly Site.

Hope it helps, Jim

Maybe but I've learned the expensive way that when it seems like fuel issues, check the simple electrical stuff.

Did you find a loose connection at the battery?

I did on mine yesterday.

Ah, might try that then as I'd disconnected it while doing the alternator. Weird how it'd come and go.

On mine, I have to wiggle the cabling back and forth as I tighten it up.

If I just tighten it up normally, it cuts out at idle. Kinda scary when it stalls at a red light, then it turns green.

Keep us posted, Jim

Jim is your cabling hooked up to top posts or side posts?

Right, well I've driven it around all day yesterday, and to work this morning. No problems.

So if you've got what you think is a fuel issue, might want to check the cheap-ish electrical stuff first. ;)

Thanks for the help, Lads.

ps - I am also side-post.
