Sulphur's "Lincoln Bridge" now on a quarter!

Post by JTalley »

Today they released a new coin featuring Sulphur's own Lincoln Bridge. The bridge was built on the 100th anniversary of President Lincoln's birthday to commemorate it, and it still stands today. Despite a light rain, the ceremony was held outside near the bridge. The rain only lasted for a few minutes and stopped, btw. A number of political figures were there, as well as some of the members of the American Legion. Music was supplied by ECU's clarinet group. They let us out of class to go see the ceremony. A Native American group did a friendship dance, something I'd never seen before (I got a short video before my phone died, #-o ). Needless to say, it was a once in a lifetime occasion. After the ceremony, people 18 and under (myself included) recieved the first new coins. Anyone 19 or older, or those not present at the ceremony, have to buy the quarters later on from the bank. After we recieved our coins, me and two friends got some of the free cake they were handing out, then went over to the bridge to take pictures.

Later today I can try to upload some of the pics, as well as a pic of the new coin.

A few pictures of the crowd-

Here's someone on stage, I think it's Wes Hilliard, one of the state representatives.
Kinda Blurry; I was far away and I only had my cell phone.

Then here's me and a friend on the Lincoln Bridge-

And here's a wider shot of it-

That's a cool bridge. Very medieval looking.

It is different from most bridges I've seen. I need to take some more pictures of it and upload a few more so you can see all the detail and effort they put into it.

I just think it's pretty cool that I got to see the ceremony. It's not something you'd see every day.

Very nice thing to do in a small town. I always travel different routes on my way to the balloon event in New Mexico. This year I did some sightseeing in southern OK. and drove through Sulphur. It's a very small town.
