Cool Table Lighter

Post by Rebel »

Thought some of you guys would get a kick out of this Airflam lighter I have on Ebay. Has no moving parts, no flint and no batteries. Story starts in 1967 when I signed on a merchant tanker in San Francisco. One of the old seaman told me to be sure and go to a lighter shop when we stopped in Japan on our way to India and pick up one of these lighters. The one I got then was shaped like a lipstick tube and when you pulled the top out of the lower base and it came in contact with the surrounding air, it would ignite. To put it out you just put it back in the base. Inside the tube that you pull out were 3 platinum wires and what looked like a small rock suspended in the tube. It burns Methanol.
Maybe some of you can explain how this can be,,I can't.

Here's a Youtube of a guy with a demo. The one toward the end of video is the lipstick tube design I was taking about.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vGYUSw-azQ

Probably looks like this.

The reaction mechanism is similar to the way your catalytic converter works.

Yep,,that one is about like the the tube one I mentioned but slightly different. The one you posted pulls out and lights the fuel in the lower part shown.
The converter I understand, as it's getting heat from the exhaust but where does any heat at all come from to ignite the example you posted or the one I mentioned. I just don't get it. Is it a reaction to air coming in contact with the Paltinum or what ?

Right, the reaction in the catalytic converter needs a bit of heat to get started.

In the lighter, room temperature is enough to start the reaction between platinum air, and methanol to create formaldehyde. The heat from this reaction ignites the methanol vapour.

So we don't want platinum around methanol. Got it,,sounds good to me. Thanks
