1st gen question
Anyone know why some of the first gen vans came with a solid sheet metal piece above the front bumper and others came with a slotted piece?

Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.

I can guess that none of the vans with the solid peice will have any of the extra "coolers" that you find behind those holes.
I had an 87 with the solid front and it had no external coolers of any kind other than the rad.
My other vans have a cooler tube in there.

if you look at the two pieces at the same time you will see that the piece with slots also has an air dam of sorts to direct more air into the radiator. I swapped my solid piece for the slotted piece so my V8 has more air coming into for cooling effect.
