AWD Engaged light, that works!

Post by Drummernaut »

Here is some vindication(Logan) for those who have gained mpg by disabling the AWD TCCM. From observations of the circuit I added, the system will engage most of the time when starting from a stop and will stay engaged depending on how hard you stand on the gas, the PWM will put a constant current(amount of current depending on the duty cycle) on the encoder motor. I first thought it might be mechanical wear or low tires but now I believe this is by design

I have read a bit and find some may disagree about the current but if you research ELI the ICE man it will make sense.

I have a short video. First I peeled on my lawn, then did a soft start from a stop, then a led-foot start from a stop. I can not attach this video so PM me and I will send you the file. It is a little less that 8mb mpg.

That is very interesting! I know when the fluid gets old and burned, the awd will pulsate when accelerating from a stop no matter the road conditions. Pm sent as I want the video.

I like the tech, but I'm sorry, I'm not sold on any appreciable mileage gain by disabling the AWD... due to the fact all those shafts are spinning whether under power or not. (But again, what do I know... as I old the old viscous t-case... and don't have any first hand experience either way.) :muhaha:

This case would be about added work for the motor. With the "electronic" AWD clutch engaged it makes more work for the motor to do as opposed to not engaged. Pushing the extra front end weight is one thing. Ad in the mechanical drag of the extra gearing and etc.., I could see why there is a mileage change. Especially if it is engaging every time from a stop, and staying engaged for most if not all of the acceleration time.

The video tells the story.

So I have been told it is OK to post certain links here, plus the video file may be too big for some mail boxes, You can find the video and info here:

This is a great idea in itself and it could also help me diagnose my TC malfunction. Thanks for posting!
