95 5.7 into my 94 CPI

Post by mikedamech »

Aloha all, I just brought home a 95 C1500 to install into my ailing 94 with the CPI fuel injection system. I'm using the trany from the PU. Can I use my ECM or use the computer, wiring harness from the donor vehicle? And will someone Please tell me if I can swap the motor mounts and how. Thanks Mike

And I suggest you pull the heads and have 'em checked for cracks. 95'-96' Vortec heads were supposedly prone to cracking due to some problem with the metal or something, don't remember what....

Thanks Peter and lockdock, It's a throttle body not vortec and I was hoping to do only the timing chain and Intake. I mostly was looking for a explanation on reversing the mounts. I checked and everyone talks about it but no one explains how to.

HPStan did the mounts that way but I don't know exactly what he did.

Reverse the V6 engine mounts to the other side of the V8. Then redrill the frame to move the right frame mount 3 inches forward and make a bracket to move the left frame mount 3 inches forward. The V8 is 4 point something inches longer than the 6 but the offset in the engine mounts makes up the difference. I have a jig set up to drill it either way.

Thanks Stan, I just figured out the mount thing. The only other thing is the stock Air filter housing. What's everyone using on the TBI engine. The least I will do is a K&N filter.

I used an after market setup with a K&N cone type breather that was meant for a Full size Chev pickup truck. The brand name escapes me. Instead of going directly to the right side as on the truck, on the Astro is was more to the front but offset a little to the right.

I also used a cone style as well. I got it off ebay fairly cheap. I had to cut the steel tube shorter to make it fit. Down side is that it sucked a lot of hot air. On my 93 AWD V8 I used a stock setup from a late 80's full size van moddified a bit. This gives the engine a bit cooler air.

Thanks Stan, nice looking filter setup Lockdoc. I'd love to find an ebay less pricey one, If I had an extra 200 bucks I'd a put in a cam. But thanks again Stan for the web page, this is the wife's van and I want to impress her every time she opens the hood. Or maybe I'll impress her in a different way because I don't think she ever opened a hood in her life.

What are you guys doing for the throttle cable? Mines way too short, the one from the doner vehicle is too short also.

Are you using a throttle body from an Astro? The Astro TB linkage is at the front of the engine opposed to the rear. I have never had a problem with the throttle cable using the stock setup.

Yeah, that question catches me by surprise also but I never swapped out a CPI engine either.

My 93 had CPI. When I converted to TBI I used the original cable with an Astro TBI unit.

I started the van today minus the exhaust. I need to start putting everything back together and sleeve the wiring. Thanks to locdoc and stan for the information on the wiring and mounts it saved me lots of time and money. I went ahead and bought the air cleaner from Airaid, it looks similar to the one pictured but my 94 is the short front so it sits on the radiator cap. I'm using a single fan on the stock radiator with a temp induced fan switch. I got pictures.
