Computer Oil Change/Life indicator

Post by thevalleyboy »

Okay so I have a scanguageII so I can read the computer codes and info. My question is in regards to the oil life indicator - I am about to do an oil change and wonder how the computer knows it's got brand new oil. Does it do this automatically? Do I have to reset it somehow? I guess I'll find out soon - if anyone knows the answer to this by all means let me know. Otherwise I'll answer my own post once I find out... see you all in about 2 beers! LOL :)

Was that even available on the M/L vans? My 2003 did not have it.

The GM reset method is to turn the key to the run position and press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times within 5 seconds.

Thanks for the 3 times in 5 seconds - I needed to do that and the scanguage jumped to 100%

So for anyone out there - it seems my van has an oil life indicator on the computer - and with a scanguage you can read that information - and to reset (as previously mentioned) turn ignition to run and press the gas 3 times to the floor in 5 seconds. Worked like a charm - I love this forum! =D>

So the van is programmed for it but there is no dash light showing it? Why the heck didn't GM put a simple light on the dash. I like this feature. My 99 Silverado had it and Lynne's 2005 TrailBlazer has it. It is pretty accurate based on our driving styles and conditions.

My 2004 Sierra has this, it reads it out "change engine oil" in a stock market fashion across the window for my odometer. It also keeps track of average speed and total hours run among many other things, and it varies oil changes depending on what your doing ie; towing, runnig empty, hard or easy driving.

My Charger has the message flashing on the navigation screen. Engine/tranny oil changes, air filter, & tire rotation intervals are all programmable by the driver...

New codes are out but they are still testing. I was sent an email March 20th to test some codes for the Aveo, Safari and Caddy. Keep checking the site out :)

I just got a Scanguage II recently (firmware 3.16), and it did not come with a remaining oil life guage. I tried programming it in, and it didn't work either. I have a 2000.

My big question is how the guage, or the PCM know how much fuel is being consumed. Is there a sensor for that?

I dont think you have it ... it is for 2001 or 2003+ models. Sorry mate.
It just goes by distance driven ... so it basically does a count down from 5000KM or 3000miles (I think?).

I emailed Linear Logic (makers of Scanguage II) asking them about fuel calculations. This was their answer;
The ScanGaugeII compiles various data points to find fuel consumption. The method for compiling data to find fuel consumption is actually proprietary.
