New water pump leaking

Replaced the water pump not that long ago and it appears to be leaking at the gasket on the back plate . Has this ever happened to anyone ? What is the point of this design ?

It can happen, did you run sealant around the mounting holes on the mount?

I just intalled it as is , it came assembled . It didn't leak at the block , it was the leaking at backing plate.
I just finished re and re on it. The gasket was wet through half way around but I could not see an obvious flaws . Oh well back together now I used a smidgen of aviation form a gasket with a new Felpro unit and it appears to be holding . Haha funny note I bought a clutch fan wrench kit for the last time it was off and thought I'll never need this again. Right ...
