Fishing in the Gulf...

Post by 9dawgs »

Hey Guys, been really busy with work lately but a couple of thursdays ago I took the day to go fishing with my youngest son Daniel and a couple of buddys. We caught over 50 yes FIFTY grouper (mostly Gags and Reds) but they were all undersized as we were only out about 16 miles or so. We would have gone out further where the bigger fish were but the water was choppy and my son was turning a bit green. So we turned around and headed closer in where the chop wasn't as bad. We were chumming in about 15ft of water and Daniel snagged this awesome Spanish mackerel. He was fighting so hard that Daniel had a rough time getting him to the boat! We discovered when he finally reeled him in that the fish had struck the bait and turned catching his tail in the hook. So the whole time he was swimming away from the boat! Ha! Daniel fought back and won the battle. We also loaded up on some grunts and a black bass to finish the trip and had some mighty good eating when we got home. It was a great day for all. And yes, the guy in the background (Brett) has an eyepatch. He's the senior pastor at my church.

Wow, sounds like a great time on the water. Where did you put the boat in the water? Didn't go by Eggmont Key and see the turtles did ya?

Actually we put in up at Tarpon Springs. My buddy owns a house on a canal up there. We did see a turtle though. It's hard to see in the photo but that's him to the middle left of the picture right above my head. We also saw a giant manta ray that flew out of the water. It was awesome but over so fast we didn't get a picture.
