Big 3

Post by Water Boy »

<<<After I posted, just saw the "ground" sticky under engines. May need to relocate this or leave it here or in both places.>>>

I was having a LOT of AM radio interference. Just about anythng electrical that happened I could hear in on the AM radio. Brake light switch coming on. Turn signal switch coming on. Somtimes the blower motor. The worst was the ignition noise. The radio sounded like a tach for the blind. What was odd was some times it was real bad and at other times it would be not so bad.

Anyway....
Ran a #4 from the alternator stud to the battery +. Had to use a washer on the alternator stud first because the whole in the premade cable was huge as comapered to the tiny stud.

Ran a #8 from the hot distribution bolt on the firewall behind the battery to the battery +.

The cable from the battery - to frame stud looked OK as well as the cable from that stud to the lower front of the engine block.

I also ran a #12 from the frame stud to the connector behind the Walmart radio just to be extra sure of the grounding.

Will give it a few days of driving to see if there is an improvement.

The pre-made cables came from either Walmart or Auto Zone as well as an assortment of battery cable bolts.
I was told getting my beauty sleep was a waste of time.

From reading what you done I don't think you can call that the big 3. And any improvements will be noticeable immediately; it won't take several days to tell. Look here for the proper way to do the big 3:

There is the "proper" way and then there is the "so-so" way. I know I didn't follow the various posted "Big 3" how-to's to the T, but hey I think I'm pretty close.

Need to have something to work on beside the wifey's to do list.

Update.

The dash voltmeter is about 1-1.5 needle widths up to the +.
The AM radio is still basically the same (ignition and other noise). Guess I'll try and replace the antenna next.
