Hi Y'all !!! Just found this site while looking topics on -96 Safari's...looks like great place to get some tips and "meet" astro/safari people. I'm new and (not anymore so) happy owner of '96 GMC Safari with Boyd's coach pack. I bought it from HERE and it has been day van in Japan. Van has been great to drive and most of all kinda silent after G20 diesel van . Well someone in Japan forget to change tranny oils...so now I have fully repaired transmission, and cat, and oxygene sensor, next I have to change fuel pump, it already does make noice. After that i really hope that it only needs gas in tank and miles under wheels Hopefully pic will be linked properly, if so here's van after we got home from England.

A noisy GM fuel pump isn't necessarily an indication of a problem. Some are louder than others and they all are noticable, especially when standing next to a running vehicle. I'd be more concerned if the pump tone changes. Sadly, there isn't a set time they need to be replaced. Some don't go much beyond 100K miles while others go over 200K miles. (Personally I'd be getting nervous beyond 150K and mine actually failed around 140K.)

Smartest move is to translate only couple words in same time otherwise sentences may be kinda weird. Safari has +120 000 KM in odometer, so pump may have come to end of it's path.

You know I hear a lot about these fuel pumps.
Perhaps I've just been lucky, I've had 4 astro/safaarivans now.
The lowest Kilometers on any of them at time of purchase was 187000KMs.
The highest KMs I've got on any of the vehicles is 365000KMs.

I've never had a fuel pump do anything but keep on pumping.
Of course, now that I've said that, Murphy will probably go kill my fuel pump tonight. Lol.

Hmmm, maybe it'll last next 20 years but after that broken transmission I have no interest to get stuck on the road , especially when we drive to some dogshow with our mastins...I bet no one will stop for hitchhikers with two ponysize dogs

My fuel pump has had a high pitched whine since I bought the van last summer, seems to run OK (126k on the van). I decided to just keep driving it...no problems so far =)

If the pump does die you might not be totally stuck. While someone cranks the engine over lay on the ground beside the van and bang the bottom of the fuel tank with your fist right in the middle. This will usually get the pump going and you should be able to run it to A shop for repairs. Just do not shut the van off until it is somewhere it can be fixed as this trick never works twice on the same pump.

Yup, I'm from southern Finland but my neck ain't as red as that y'all might show I just happen to like country music. Just dropped safari in pump change, now I should know what there is in tank. It may be that new pump is "monday model" and it'll brake after weeks driving but that's a change that must be taken...

just hang on to the old pump since it still works. If the new one is a bad one at least you can be driving again with the old pump if it is going to take time to order in parts. How do you find the avalability of parts. I know that some of the members in England have a hard time getting parts because the van was never sold there by the factory.

Just got van back from shop, now I can barely hear the pump hopefully this one works for loooong time. Place where I've bought parts imports some and have kinda decent dealers here in Finland. Transmission took few weeks to fix since parts were ordered from States. I still have the old pump, so if the new one breaks I have sparepart...noicy but working.
