4.8 l?

Post by GnarliSafari »

my neighbor who i talk to regularly and happens to be a retired auto body guy, and pretty up on his knowledge claims to have a stock 4.8 l in his astro. he rebuilds most of his own engines and transmissions and is constantly redoing old chevys for friends so i believe him but have never heard of this before. its an 85 he said his dad ordered it from the dealer under the impression he was getting a V8, it turned out to still be a V6 just not the 4.3, his dad died soon after getting the van so it became his and has kept it since. but has anyone else ever seen ordered or owned one of these? is there any noticeable performance differences? i forget it may even be carbeurated (why is that not in spell check?) and i have a 99 so definitely not worth a swap for me, but worth buying if he is ever willing to part with it?

The only 4.8 L that was available in '85 was the L25 straight six. I really doubt that he has anything other than a 4.3 L.

I believe one of the members of this Forum who used to be with GM mentioned one time that a few astro-safari's had been fitted with v 8's.These were not an option for the public and were just test vehicles,i believe these were 5.7ltr 350's.
Highly doubtful this engine is stock.

i never said its a V8, it might be the straight 6 L25 i hate my bike mentioned as it is a 1985 like i stated. but i would think if you could cram a straight 6 in there someone may have tried to put a V12 in one by now. he isnt a moron so while i have never seen the engine myself i believe him when he says it is not the 4.3 or the 4cylinder most commonly mated. he did say his father had to wait several months to get the van as it was a special order. what i did say is his dad ordered it thinking it was a V8 and when he finally got it he found out it was just a bigger 6 than the 4.3.

Just run it together ihatemybike, or if you want to abbreviate ihmb works too.

Your neighbor might not be a moron, but I definitely think he's mistaken. Grab the VIN and post it for us to analyze.

No pics...it doesn't exist! [-X

GM only gave 2 engine choices...the 2.5L I-4 and the 4.3L V6. The 2.5 has always been fuel injected where the 4.3 was carb'd in 1985 only.
Current rides:

2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Point us to a link of what you found. I did a bit of searching yesterday and only came up with the current 4.8L V-8. (I'm not doubting you at all. I'm curious!)
