Anyone running 235's on 16's?

Post by betz »

My '05 Astro came stock with 16's. I have the 4" overland lift and I am running 225's right now. I have already done some trimming to the front bumper so that they would fit right, but they are rubbing the inner flap that keeps mud from getting into the engine as is. I'm wondering if anyone is running 235's on 16" rims, and if so, what does it take to keep them from rubbing?

255/70R16. A 30" tall tire on my 4-5" lift, but only 3" in the front. DId some trimming on the facial. Sorry, but I still don't know the metric size relationships to height, so I don't know if the 255 is taller or the 235 is taller.

I did take a palm nailer and turn it into a palm hammer and hammer the inner fender wells a little. I run the older Z71 5 spoke wheels with Kelly Pathfinder AT's.

Thanks for the reply T. Low. My van has those same 5 spoke rims on it that you are running now. Im surprised that you are running 255's! That's awesome! I might end up jumping to that size. What's your opinion on the way that your van handles with those tires?

Keep in mind that I have only had the van for three months. I probably put 300 miles on it at stock height before i lifted it. So I don't feel I am the best guy to ask about how the lift and tires changed the ride. It doesn't seem too different to me.

Also, I drive all day in my company F-150 with the Lariat 20" wheels and Pirelli Scorpians.

Then my Fiancee drives me around in the evenings in the Murano I bought her (he he) with the Factory 18"s on Toyo Proxy ST's. Its a performance oriented crossover. Both those vehicles are much stiffer riding than the Astro.

So, to me, the Astro is a very soft, loose ride, period. But it is what it is and I have no complaints.
The wheel and tire combo seem to handle good. No complaints on the freeway, around town, in the mud, in the rain, on the beach or in the snow, so far anyway.

8.5" clearence at the rear differential.

Only problem is the gearing is now too tall. 70mph in the winds is a struggle to get comfy in a gear. I am building my van with travelling over the mountain pass in mind. I think I have 3:42, I am going to Randy's Rign & Pinion to get 4:10's and an Eaton posi.

How well do those 255's fit on your rims? Do they seem to bubble out? I know that it can be bad to go with a tire that is too wide for the rim.

Good Q. I don't think its excessive, it seems to fit like my F-150 stock set up of Rugged Trails on the FX4 18"s. I'll try to post a pic tonite.

The tires were orignally purchased by a lady for her suv. Her husband got upset about her buying tires without him so she drove them right back. About $145 tire, I got em mounted etc out the door for $433. Point is, they were originally sold for a stock suv wheel.

You, Sir, are a very handsome van, if i do say so myself.
