Upgraded headlight wiring harness

Post by astrozam »

A little while back I installed some driving lights to add some additional road depth to help see along these backcountry roads, link to post

Unfortunately, light is like an addicting drug, once you see what you've been missing you start to wonder if maybe there is even more to see, and thankfully THERE IS!

I came across a few web articles that discussed making your own upgraded headlight wiring harnes, I thought HMMM and ran the idea past our resident gm wiring guru
( v8famvan ) to see if the idea was plausible, he agreed that if wired up properly that this could indeed help me see the light tongue.gif

Now, all the wiring schematics I came across did not factor
in the DRL ( daytime running light ) equation, so for the time being we will leave that aspect out.

here is the harness I built, all wiring is 12g except for the wire's that splice into the oem high/low beam wires, for these I used 18g to the relays.

This pic shows how I tapped into the oem high/low wiring

Here is where I mounted my relays

This pic shows two 12g green wires exiting the loom and going to ground (under hood rod support bar ) and two 12g orange wires ( fused ) using a standard inline 15a ato style fuse, going to the pos batt terminal, you can also see in the top right corner where I grounded the new headlight socket ( white 12g ) wire

another pic of the above from a different angle

I'll add some night shots later, but for now I only have some daytime pics

first is low beam

high beam

and high beam with driving lights ( driving lights are not part of this headlight harness )

Remember, I've got the old style sealed beam 6054 headlights, but with this upgrade it doesn't matter, cause the nightime turns to daytime.

I'll try to add some night pics later rocker.gif

Here's a few pics I took about an hour ago, my Dad wanted to see the difference the new wiring made, so we went for a spin, just for some reference there is a small dot ( stop sign ) approx in the middle of the 2nd and 3rd pic, it is 1km ( 0.6 miles ) away

First pic is low beams...

next pic is high beam only...

last pic is high beam and driving lights...

Just after we took the pics we drove down to the end of the road turned left and had to stop at the level crossing for a train, there was a car approaching the opposite way and being the considerate guy that I am, I turned off my high beams and driving lights, unfortunately as we were waiting for the train to pass
a jerk in a jeep, lol ( no offence meant to jeep owners, I love them ) came up behind and didn't turn off his high beams, I had to flip up my rearview mirror, the dude still didn't get it and so after the train passed by and after the oncoming car passed me I slowly crossed over the tracks, once over the tracks
the jerk behind me got a little impatient and was about to try and pass, so I hit the high beams and driving lights and started to pull over to the shoulder to let my new friend pass by, almost instantly he turned off his high beams and strangely enough no longer had any desire to pass me and got behind again and stayed well behind, my dad and I we're howlin, I guess my jeep buddy had seen the light and wanted no part of it ( what a heathin,LOL )

Now, if my little o'l 6054 sealed beams can improve this much, then I imagine you boys running your composite headlights outta be able to do some drive-by BBQ, just remember to save me some pimp.gif

Are you running standard halogens? If so, upgrade to some Cool Blues or SilverStars and you'll really see the light. \:D/

I'm currently trying the Nighthawk Vision Headlights, I have tried the Sylvania SilverStars and although I liked the light they thru out, they didn't last me very long so after there demise I just threw in some plain o'l crappy-tire brand headlights, when they finally bit it, I was thinkin of trying the SilverStars again but decided to try the Nighthawk Vision because they were cheaper AND they were supposed to help light up the sides of the road better than the SilverStars.

Whatever light anyone happens to be using, this upgrade will make a very noticeable increase in output. Its a must do for anyone travelling backroads

p.s my pics really don't do the upgrade any justice ( get it,lol )

So, with this upgrade you can run both hi/low at the same time?
unfortunately as we were waiting for the train to pass
a jerk in a jeep, lol ( no offence meant to jeep owners, I love them ) came up behind and didn't turn off his high beams, I had to flip up my rearview mirror, the dude still didn't get it
That's when you need a set of these....
(just make sure it's not a cop)

I'm sure you could wire it up that way, mine only have either high or low beam on.
And you guessed it Marty, my next lighting mod will be better back-up lights
