Is it possible to install an 89 instrument cluster on a 87 dash?

Yes, but keep in mind that the 87 prolly still had a speedo drive cable, whereas I know for a fact that my 89 had an electronic speedo

Thanks. . . I'll just have to get that from the donor van. . . Right?

Mad, your 87 has a speedo cable and a transmission that has a place for the speedo cable to connect up to; the 89's transmission uses an electrical connector to pass along the vehicle speed signal. I've heard that you can change the speedometer gear in the earlier transmission to the cog wheel that the 89 has, but you would also have to have the DRAC module from the 89 to act as an interface between the speed signal from the transmission and the speedometer itself. You'll also need the wiring from the 89.

That is sounding more and more complicated . . . #-o
I guess the original one looks quite pretty right now. . .
Thanks for the advice Rob.
I'll see what I can find at my friend's house. I know the van has no engine or tranny, so maybe I could get whatever it's there and try to find the rest later.
Maybe I can use some wiring diagrams and figure out how to make an adapter for the wiring or something. . . :-k ](*,) #-o
I think I'm going to leave now, my head hurts already. . .

The hot ticket is to snag a dash from an S-10 which came optional with a tach. Year for year, you should be ok. You'll have to pour thru the shop manuals of both trucks to match the wiring, but I'd say that this would be well worthwhile.
