R12 or R134A?

Who knows what year our vans started coming out of the factory with 134?

My 92 had R-12.

From the stealership, rumour mill has it that they are coming out with something better (colder) than R-134a. I'll believe that when I see it.

You can tell what you have by the access valve if it screws on its 12, if it pushs on its 134

My research agrees that they started using 134 in 1994 vans. I know mine is R12, I am researching possible upgrades to the system since I am planning to get the AC working again.

Stick with the R12. 134a doesn't cut the mustard.

Yes, that's what I've been hearing as well.

My project is finished. The AC is working! I kept it R12, but I installed a condenser from a '94 van because I found they are more efficient. I also installed an electric pusher fan on the front of the condenser to help with airflow.
The air temperature out of the vents varies a lot depending on outside temperature, humidity and road speed. There have been days in the upper 90s with high humidity when I was stuck in heavy traffic that it could only manage 58 or 60 degrees, but I've also seen it blow down to 41 degrees when the ambient conditions are a bit better.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it!
