Instrument panel lights randomly flash...

Post by ricer_dad »

2000 Astro LX, ~62k miles, original owner, no mods*, replaced the battery ~20 months ago
Symptom:
When it is very damp out (heavy fog or rain) the warning lights randomly flash on and off while driving. Started about a month ago, very intermittent, but doesn't seem to affect engine running (van runs normally). The ABS, the highbeams, the fuel gage drops to empty (off), security light, transmission selector led, and others blink on and off randomly (a real light show!!!). Overhead led console looses power. Seems to settle down with only the security light remaining on. Then starts blinking again. Cycling power (ignition off and on, in neutral) has no effect.
When dry out no problems.
Actions so far:
Simple visual inspection (no dash disassembly) shows no obvious shorts/opens or loose connectors. Disconnected battery terms and carefully cleaned and wire brushed and reconnected. (not the problem)
Suggestions anyone may have?

Thanks.

Hmm. I would almost check the ECM connections first. In case you didn't know the ECM is located to the left and down from the battery almost below the brake master cylinder. It's a shot int he dark as I haven't seen a wring diagram or schematic for that year but hey it's easier to get at to check first.

I had a similar problem, it was a loose ground connection on the motor on the driver side head at the back.

I'd check all the grounds, there is a couple at the front of the motor by the thermostat housing. Also the one above where the battery sits has a few things on it.

On my 96 Safari I found a connector right behind the battery that had corroded. I removed the connector and hard wired that wiring harness and all of the problems disappeared. :yawinkle:
