Anyone rebuild a G80 diff? Or are they considered disposable?

Ellabilt, I was just poking around the net earlier today checking into GM differentials and found that there is a DVD available that is concerned with rebuilding differentials. I don't have a url unfortunately, but the DVD is by Paul Zank and is available for $29.95. Seems to have gotten good reviews. I've put it on my list of things to get.

I don't think the G80 is rebuildable. I have yet to ever hear of one being done.

I'm going to have to pull one at the yard and check it out. If it's a clutch type, like a ford trac-lok, it should be serviceable if parts can be found. If they are cone type like an auburn, probably not. Just curious if anyone here had looked into one and knew for sure.

The G80's use a cam actuator that locks the rear. I don't think there are clutches because you don't need to add limited slip additive to one. Your best bet is to install a Detroit Truetrac or Auburn posi.

g80 can be rebuilt depends if it is auburn or gov lock. the auburn can not be rebuilt the gov lock can and does have clutches gm still sells them. some gov locks need you to drill hole to get pin ratchet pin out. i have a freind that rebuilds them and sells them

Okay, now I'm starting to understand this a little better. G80 is GM's option code for limited slip, regardless of vehicle or actual manufacturer of the limited slip differential (i.e. my G80 diff in my 2500 Suburban is obviously not the same as an Astro G80) So........the Astro G80 could be of a couple different configurations, but I'd bet they are all the same. I just need to go pull one and check it out for myself instead of sitting here talking about it!
