The top fan housing sits under the air intake, and is held in place by six bolts. Removal is very simple and may be necessary for access needed in a number of procedures. To remove it, you'll need to do the following:
1. Remove the air intake, as per this procedure:

2. Remove the bolts. For this procedure you will need a 10mm socket, about a foot worth of extentions and possibly a universal joint (swivel socket) for one or two bolts. Three bolts are located on the top of the housing facing the radiator. Two are located on the bottom of both passenger and driver sides. Here are the bolts I was talking about:
3. Remove the fan housing by lifting it out. It may hang up on coolant hoses--push them aside--and it may take some slight maneuvering to do this, or maybe even a little slight bending of the plastic to get it past things like the radiator cap. And this is what your left with:
