Problem with 95 Safari van blowing fuse

Post by mkan »

I have a 1995 Safari AWD, keeps blowing 10a Ecm fuse. Have replaced fuel pump thinking that was the problem why the van wouldn't start in the first place, was not getting gas. Wasn't til after replacing the pump found the blown fuse, but now it keeps blowing the fuse. Have disconnected relays, EGR valve, and a few other conn. that I don't know what they are, fuse still blows the minute you turn the key to the on position. It has a 4.3L engine. The van first quit on me while I was driving it. It just died and would not start. If I put in a bigger fuse, I've tried up to 20A, wants to start but blows the fuse before it can start.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your van? What I would do is, using the schematic, look at everything that gets power from that fuse and disconnect all of it. Then, tun the key on. If the fuse blows still, then either a wire is pinched and shorting straight to ground, or there's something still connected. If the fuse doesn't blow, then start plugging things in one at a time. When the fuse pops, you've found the culprit.

Let us know what you find.

Not sure if this is fixed yet or not. Pull the doghouse and check the wire harness that crosses over the passenger side valve cover for melted and/or burned wires. This harness goes to the ECM.

I wonder how this ECM fuse blowing issue panned out. My 93 Astro just started doing the same thing. Only happens when I accelerate hard while moving, so difficult to troubleshoot. I made sure the accelerator linkage wasn't rubbing on any wires. Blown 3 times so far, but starts right up after replacing and goes again. Until read more here it's off to view the wiring diagram.

That wiring harness tip was excellent! Thanks soooo much! Just found the wiring harness on passenger side was worn. It had been rubbing against the breather's flex tube. As I moved the harness I saw sparking between it and the flex tube where it had been rubbing. The sparking occurred even with ignition off, so it was a quick diagnosis. Found 3 wires rubbed to exposure. Re taped each wire and the entire harness. All is good!
