I read the specs on the 4.3-I have a question

Post by markmitchinnh »

I have a 1989 4.3 from a safari from what I read I believe this is a better block to build due to cams and lack of balance shaft. my question is: can I use the vortec heads on the old block?
This is for my S-10 4x4 simply because the 4x4 makes it very hard and expensive to put in a V8.
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.
Bought on Monday the 16th of April 2012

Mark-this is a long article, but I think if you spend time reading it,your going to find what swaps and what doesn't.

One other thing Mark.I honestly don't know about the 4 x 4 aspect of a S10 V8 swap. But I do know there is a boat load of V8 conversion parts for S10's that has been around for yrs.

Thanks Gary I did read that article but all is basically says about the heads is the differences and the angles it however does not say whether the true vortec heads fit on the older blocks.

As for the V8 swap I have the JTR book and at one time you could buy the oil pan from them but they no longer sell it and I can weld but I have never even attempted making an oil pan nor do I want to try lol.

This 4.3 may end up in my Safari if we decide to move to California because it will never pass there inspection with a V8.

I have both a complete 1989 4.3 (minus intake and exhaust manifolds) and a 1998 4.3 with everything but I wish to kep the TBI system simply because I know how to rebuild and trouble shoot them.

Why wouldn't you run a four barrel manifold and TBI adapter on the 98??.

Because the 4 barrel manifold was (for the V8) $150 and the TBI intake was $280. and the adapter was only $22.00 on ebay. Now as far as the V6 I have not looked at prices so I have not thought that far ahead LOL.

any head that came from a 4.3 will physically bolt to any 4.3 block, any year.
