ive been thinking about getting and building another awd astro i miss my old 95. for those of you running a 98-04 astro with 31" tires and 4.10 or 4.56 gears what kinda mpg`s are you seeing? right now i am thinking of getting a loaded 98-04 lift it 4 - 5 inches run 31 inch tires regear to 4.56 do a transfer case swap so i can have the option of 2wd and 4lo. and to answer your question why 4.56 before you ask.
1) i bought 4.56s for my 95 and never installed em so as long as they will work i will put em in.
2) i will use the van to tow my toys up the mountains so the gear of the 4.56 will be nice for that.
3) i dont drive fast
4) most of my driving is city
4" lift ,31s w/ 4.10 what mpg`s?

'03, 30.75" tires, 4:10's, between 15.5 and 16.5 mpg.
I'd imagine it will change drastically depending on what you are towing, especially on the way up the mountain.

Re: 4" lift ,31s w/ 4.10 what mpg`s?
I'm with Tom on this one...my 98 had 30" tires, and 4.11 gears and would get 15 all day. I did see almost 20 on trips. I think 4.56's are a little steep, but if you already have them (and YES the ones you bought for the 95 will fit up to 2005) use them. Worst case is you go to a set of 4.10's later and sell the 4.56's.
Just as a side note, the front rebuild kit may or may not work for you. Depends on what you have whether it is a complete kit with axle bearing and seals or a basic rebuild kit. The axle bearings and seals are different.
