Serious oil filter adapter problems

Post by 1Gary »

I am "trying" to change the gaskets on the oil filter adapter and have a major issue with a leak on a 1999 4.3 X engine.Hard to see up there and hold the O-ring in place along with the center gasket.I know some of you guys have dealt with this before and am looking for suggestions. It certainly is a major component in the life of the engine and is serious in nature.Zam did a delete on his oil cooler too,so I am sure he dealt with the gaskets.

I'm not sure if your '99 is the same as my '00, but I had to change my oil cooler manifold gasket when I dropped the pan. I don't recall having any issues, but try putting a dab of silicone to hold the gaskets in place.

Thanks for the reply TB.Fel-Pro tech told me not to use silicone on the O-ring because of possible leak issues could occur. If you have the pan off,it would think it would make it tons easier to hold the O-ring/gasket in place while your putting it back up there.Heck I can't even see it while I am trying to bolt it back together. All this happened while replacing the rad and the oil cooling lines looked like they had been leaking for yrs so I replaced them and thought because of a drip on the oil filter I would replace the gaskets while I was at it.Even went and bought a T4 socket for the bolts so I could tighten them properly. So while I was "trying" to clean up the leaks now I got a mess on the shop floor with speedy dry soaking up my new oil and have to work on my back with oil all over the bottom of the truck )>) .No chance to power wash the bottom of truck because there is a well for the apartments right by the shop overhead door.Too big of risk of run off effecting the well.

What do you guys think of me getting threaded rod to thread into the bolt holes for a guide and nuts to hold it in place until I get each bolt back on it??.I could use Vaseline to hold the O-ring which if alittle got into the oil wouldn't matter. It wouldn't clog any oil passages and would when hot just turn into a liquid and combine with the oil. Then use gasket cement on the center gasket to hold that in place.

I do know this.It must be the last time I take it apart. It is critical to the life of this engine and truck. This time I must cure the leak.I know you can't see it,but got the game on face on now!!.

Gary, you and I are old enough to remember back in the day we used 3M weatherstrip adhesive to glue everything. It still works. A dap here and there and the gaskets are stuck for life.

Well Zam because I do intend to do some towing with the truck,I am trying to not delete the oil cooler lines.Gezz I just bought new ones too.

And I would after buying a T-14 socket have to get a 10mm Allen wrench too to hang the new lines off the shop wall if I delete them.

If you read back on this thread Keith, you can see I have been having problems bolting back the gasket and O-ring for the housing. ](*,)

Been painting an apt Gary....is there not a recess for the gasket to sit it on the top of the manifold, like in this pic?

Image maybe its the paint fumes but I'm a little unclear why you are having the problem...got any pics?

From what you say, it sounds like removing the oil pan will grant you better access. Have you considered that option? It should be very easy on a 2WD.

Keith-to put the housing back on you have to be sure the O-ring stays seated in the groove and I can't see up there.Once I took back apart it got me thinking about the size of the oil filter rubber gasket compared to the size of the O-ring.Well that now is a no brainier.Certainly the oil filter rubber gasket is more reliable.Bottom line the oil filter adapter O-ring design is a bad design.Because I couldn't see it I couldn't tell if it was seated in the groove or not.So when one side of it let go the bolts holding the housing where alittle more than finger tight. If the O-ring was wider than I would feel more comfortable risking my engine over the long term. Now it is no wonder in my mind why you guys dumped the oil cooler lines in a delete. And now I have as well.Hell-I'll eat the $40.00 for the new oil cooler lines and hang them from the wall of the shop as a reminder that O.E.M. isn't always the right way.

Now I got to figure a way to go to a car wash without taking a bath to clean all my almost $5.00 a qt off the bottom of the truck. ](*,)
