my 96 astro is really running rough, bogging when I step on the gas. I pulled codes p0101,p0102,p0300, and p1406.
the misfire and MAF codes I am assuming is from a earlier problem which was solved by replacing plugs, wires and cap and rotor. I never erased the codes as the SES light went out on it's own.
I unplugged the MAF and saw no improvement.
the 1406 I know is related to the EGR valve, but was wondering if it could be a plugged catalytic converter causing the EGR problem?
it is pretty bad all the time now, but earlier it was pretty good when cold but got a lot worse when it warmed up, making me wonder about the converter.
any insight would be greatly appreciated......
TIA.....

Re: p1406 error code
unbolt the front of the converter when it is running rough and see if it smooths out. The plugged converter would cause massive back pressure that could cause the issue loosening the clamp bolts will let the pressure out (loud!!) but the engine should smooth out. I am not sure what the other codes are but also look at the MAF sensor going in you can clean the wires with a toothbrush and some carb cleaner. If it isn't reading the air into the engine correctly and is compensating every couple seconds due to bad info in that could cause issues as well.

Re: p1406 error code
the converter is welded so there is no way to disconnect the front half of it.

You can remove an Oxygen sensor before the converter and do the same thing.

Gotta love an easy fix. If you live in the rust belt you will find that anti seize is your best friend.
