SMAW advice?

So i suck at welding and today the crappy electrode holder on my little 85 amp welder broke while practicing. Has anyone had to replace your holder before? Since i'm fiddling with it i was thinking of putting longer heavier gauge leads on it, they are 8awg and short enough that if your body isn't between the welder and the work piece sparks hit it once in a while. i was thinking 4awg 10-15' long

any words of wisdom?

Longer is certainly more convenient, with a low amperage welder like that the cheapest way to do it is get good quality 25 foot booster cables and carefully split them. I have push in connectors in all of my welders so that both cables can be completely removed from the welder. These are only a few dollars and any welding supplier will have them. Most you will have to do is drill a hole in your sheet metal housing. You can buy a replacement holder at your welding supplier.

well cracked it open today and found out both leads go straight into the coil no easy way to change the leads other then cutting them off so i'll leave them alone and just change the ground clamp that broke

here a picture of the inside of this baby welder
