I finally found a mechanic who knows which end of a wrench to use. It's official -- the latch is broken and needs to be replaced.

After lightening my bank account to the tune of $200, my dutch door woes are at an end. The latch mechanism was so full of dust and crud, it could not be flushed out. The new latch was $78 and change and the labor at the stealership accounted for the rest. Now I can tackle other items, primarily the AC.
